eating too fast
Just to vent.
I'm 5 weeks out, and after a few setbacks, doing well now. My only problem is no matter what, I still tend to eat fast. I always pay for it, feel like I'm having a heart attack for a few minutes. I do find that I'm not at intolerant to some foods as I thought I would be. Any suggestions on how to slow down? My quantity is fine, I keep it about 1/4 cup for everything, and try to do high protein.
Also, when is a good time to be able to eat fresh fruit? I'm craving like crazy fresh fruit and salads!

I find myself eating too fast sometimes too, and have forgotten to chew a few times out of habit I guess.
My diet guidelines state no uncooked veggies for 3 months. I have had a tiny bit of watermelon and a very ripe peach and peeled grapes though and they did not bother me. I have also done applesauce and canned fruit and bananas.
As for salads??? Maybe try a wilted spinach salad . I don't thnk the lettuce would be a good idea.

I was scared in the beginning to eat too fast so I would be real careful but now I see I sometimes eat too fast before I realize it. I have to put my fork or spoon down in between bites. I craved fruit too but didn't eat it for a couple of months unless it was yogurt or apple sauce or something like that. Try putting your fork down in between each fork full. A habit is formed quickly. Make it a habit. I used to have trouble with drinking while I ate so I couldn't have a glass in front of me because I would forget. Now it is routine. Linda
I mostly do this when I go too long between meals! It's like the food tastes SOOO good! I actually, JUST did this and am suffering now! Had to get labs this morning...I works nights....so I was STARVING (even after 3 bottles of water in the last 4 hours!)!!
Usually...I put the fork down...chew it a million times....wait...wait....next bite!
Fruit...I didnt have it for a long time...not because I was told not to...but food just really wasnt appealing to me for a while....so, I really cant answer that. But, if you are really craving...and dont have a written guide from your surgeon...I would suggest putting a call in to the office and asking.....better to be safe than sorry!

Me too!! I always throw it back up. Miserable...
My Dad says I have always eaten like somebody is about to grab my food away from me. I have found that if I literally put my spoon/fork down between bites, it helps. And, I have to really concentrate on it.
I am at 6 weeks today, and I got fruit that you peel last week. I have had watermelon, canteloup, and peaches. I tried a smoothie with fresh blackberries, but that did not do so well. The others were great. I can also have salad and cooked veggies. I have had a little bit of tomato (peeled), but that is all I have been brave enough to try.
I am craving a salad from Longhorn...with honey mustard and bacon bits, but that is a nono!
Weird things bother me...baked potatoes, grits - always come back up!

As far as eating too fast you can try to use a baby spoon that will force you to take much smaller bites. If you are anything like I was it was hard to get out of the habit of taking really big bites as that was the way we were programed for so long. With the smaller bites like one green bean instead of 4 you will automatically chew better and take smaller bites. As far as the fruit... Blend them up into a smoothie with very small pieces in your drink and that might satisfy your craving. My Surgeon said no seeds for a while and I think you are on the same plan as I used Dr Hart so make sure you do a melon or like blue berries or something with no seeds. OH and DONT watch TV while you eat! Focus on Eating and not other things. Eating is your job when your eating. The only time I have problems is when I'm not paying attention to what I'm eating or how I'm eating .. after a while this will become a habit and become much easier!! Good luck!! Hugs.
